JayDick Reverse MiniBang
The JayDickReverse Minibang is a fannish event focusing on the relationship between Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. During the four months of the bang, artist-author pairs will create an art piece and a fic accompanying it. Curious about the details? Read on!

What is a Reverse Minibang?

A bang is an event during which fic writers pitch an idea, and then are teamed up with an artist to create an illustrated fic.
A reverse bang is a bang where an artist comes up with the prompt: the author writes the fic based on that idea.
A mini bang is different from usual (“big”) bangs only in the requirements: fics are shorter, and the art is less complex.

So if all the below details are tl;dr at first, how should you imagine a reverse Minibang?

  • artists sign up with an idea. (“Jason and Dick are firefighters!”)
  • authors choose from all the ideas submitted (“Oh, I could write a firefighter!AU”)
  • the teams get around four months to work on their piece: in the end, they will end up with an art piece and a fic (a minimum of 5000 words) based on the original idea
  • finally, we all gorge ourselves on all the good content

Rules and requirements

General

Who can apply?

Anyone who is 18 or older!

Does this mean this is an explicit-only / ship-only event?
— Nope! See next question for details.

What type of content can I apply with?

You can apply with any prompt where the focus is Jason and Dick's relationship. It can be romantic or platonic, and there are no restrictions based on dynamic. This means we welcome:

  • any rating from General Audiences to Explicit
  • romantic, platonic or familial interpretations of their relationship
  • in case of a romantic/sexual relationship, either of them can be on top/bottom or they can switch

Note! This being a content-inclusive event means you might run into interpretations you don't like. We will try to make sure you can filter these during the event, but please remember that they are allowed and there will be no tolerance towards any type of bullying, including for “problematic” content.

Roles: Artist, Author, Beta and Pinch Hitter

You will be able to sign up as:

  • an artist — this means you bring the prompts
  • an author — this means you get to pick the prompt from all the prompts
  • an art beta* — this means you provide feedback and/or help with brainstorming on art pieces
  • a fic beta* — this means you provide feedback and/or help with brainstorming on written pieces
  • an art pinch hitter* — this means you will be contacted if an artist drops out
  • a fic pinch hitter* — this means you will be contacted if an author drops out

* Note! Both the beta and the pinch hitter roles are optional. Check the beta and pinch hitter section for more info.

Can I sign up for more than one role?

Yes, you can! However, if you sign up as both an artist and an author, you will not be paired with yourself.

Communication and the discord server

Mods are going to communicate everything via e-mail. (Make sure you sign up with an e-mail address you regularly check!) You don't need to be available at any other chat or social media platform to participate in the bang.

You can, however, join our Discord server after signing up. Here, we'll share reminders and the information shared in your emails, and you'll be able join sprints and ping the mods with questions if you'd like.

For Artists

Requirements

The art requirements are: a fully composed piece with lineart and flat colors, or the equivalent in your preferred medium.

This can mean a lot of things: we trust you to decide what counts. But if you are unsure, you can reach out to us and we'll help you confirm!

For posting:

  • You need to be able to post your work digitally. This means you are welcome to create a traditional piece (e.g., ink or paint), but you need to be able to scan or photograph it in a good quality.
  • You don't need an AO3 account to post - you can embed or link your art piece in your author's AO3 work.
(You are, of course, welcome to post it as a separate AO3 work or appear on the work as a co-creator. We'll have a posting guide to help with all these options.)

Sign-ups

For sign-ups, you only need to bring yourself! We'll ask about your name, e-mail address, how many prompts you are bringing, and that's it.

After you sign up, you'll be able to fill out the prompt submission form, sign up as a beta / pinch hitter and join the discord server, if you'd like.

If you also want to sign up as an author, don't forget to also fill out that form! (Remember, the dates are slightly different for that one!)

Prompt submissions

To submit your prompts, you'll need to fill out a separate form. What to know about this?

  • Prompt submissions are from May 9 to June 9, so you have time to think and have brainstorming sessions between signing up and final submission if you need it.
  • You can submit up to 3 prompts. You'll need to fill out the form separately for each prompt.
  • We'll ask you to submit a prompt and a sketch with additional details. You can read all about this in our prompt submissions guide.

Beta for art pieces

You will be able to ask for an art beta during the creation period.

  • We'll ask if you'd like to be connected to an art beta during every check-in, or you can ask in the Discord server inbetween. (Or send us an email, if you are not part of the server.)
  • You'll be able to specify if you'd like someone to help you brainstorm with your art or give constructive criticism – the more you say, the easier a beta can decide to help you out.
  • The beta role is optional: from time to time we'll email betas with a list of artworks looking for a beta, and they can claim it on a first come first serve basis. This means that even if you ask for a beta, we can't guarantee you instantly get one.

Pinch hit for art pieces

If life goes differently than you planned and you need to drop out, we'll discuss with your author if they'd like to drop, post without an art piece, or be assigned a pinch-hit artist.

This is important because it means by signing up then dropping out you allow someone else (the author and/or the pinch hit artist) to use your prompt.

Brainstorming activities before the working period

We know that having to submit a prompt and a sketch so early in the event can seem like a lot. To make it easier, we are planning a couple of activities during the first month (May 9 - June 9) on the Discord server (for example sprints, brainstorming sessions, and prompt games) to help you get started. These will be held if there is a demand for it.

For Authors

Requirements

The fic requirements are: a complete fic of a minimum 5000 words, edited to a level where you feel comfortable posting it.

For posting:

  • You need to have an AO3 account to post. If you do not have one, feel free to contact us and we'll help you get one.
  • The art will need to be embedded or linked in your work - you can discuss the options and details with your artist before posting, and we'll have a posting guide to help with all these.

Sign-ups

For sign-ups, you only need to bring yourself! We'll ask about your name, e-mail address, how many prompts you are signing up for (as in how many fics you'd like to write), and that's it.

After you sign up, you'll be able to sign up as a beta / pinch hitter and join the Discord server, if you'd like. Prompt claiming is only happening later, so feel free to sit back and relax after you sign up.

If you also want to sign up as an artist, don't forget to also fill out that form! (Remember, the dates for that one are a bit different!)

Prompt claims

To claim a prompt you'd like to work on, you'll receive a list of all available prompts to choose from before filling out a form.

  • You'll be able to work on up to three prompts during the event.
  • During claims, you'll be able to filter the prompts.
  • Prompts are not first come first serve: you'll need to choose a few prompts and the mods will do the matching, making sure everyone gets a prompt.
  • There will be a guide posted to help you with the process.
  • The claiming form will only be open for a couple of days, so please try to make sure you have some time during that period. We'll inform you in advance after you sign up.

Beta for fics

You will be able to ask for a beta reader during the creation period.

  • We'll ask if you'd like to be connected to a beta during every check-in, or you can ask in the Discord server inbetween. (Or email the mods, if you are not part of the server.)
  • You'll be able to specify if you'd like someone to help you brainstorm, check your SPAG, give constructive criticism, etc - the more you say, the easier a beta can decide to help you out.
  • The beta role is optional: from time to time we'll email betas with a list of works looking for a beta, and they can claim it on a first come first serve basis. This means that even if you ask for a beta, we can't guarantee you instantly get one.

Pinch hit for fics

If life goes differently than you planned and you need to drop out, we'll discuss with your artist and assign them a pinch-hitter if desired. Please note that if you worked on your story details together with your artist, they might reuse those in their collaboration with the pinch-hitter.

For betas and pinch-hitters

Types of roles and sign-ups

These are the optional roles:

  • an art beta — this means you provide feedback and/or help with brainstorming on art pieces
  • a fic beta — this means you provide feedback and/or help with brainstorming on written pieces
  • an art pinch hitter — this means you will be contacted if an artist drops out
  • a fic pinch hitter — this means you will be contacted if an author drops out

For sign-ups, you only need to bring yourself! We'll ask about your name, e-mail address, which role(s) are you signing up for, and that's it.

After you sign up, you'll be able to join the Discord server, if you'd like.

Both the beta and the pinch hitter roles are optional and the claiming happens on a first come first serve basis.

This means that if you sign up for one or more of these roles, you will get an email when a team is looking for a beta or a pinch hitter (usually in batches, after check-ins), and you can decide whether you'd like to do it.

There'll also be the opportunity for creators to ping betas in the discord server - these matches are arranged by you guys, without the moderators. Pinch hitter assignments however, will always be arranged by the mods.
